25 JPNCRO Ramdhan

Croatia were slightly fortunate to beat Japan by a goal to nothing in a throughly enjoyable game, which determined which of the two debutants went on, and who didn't.

Ramesh Ramdhan from Trinidad and Tobago was the referee - in general this was a very solid performance by him, only spoilt by two incidents under the DOGSO heading.

Big Decisions

Ramdhan faced a couple of potential DOGSO incidents, in neither of them did he issue the correct sanction:

12' - very borderline to a red card, but given that the attacker was running wide and that this ball wasn't that easy control, I would argue that the correct sanction was a yellow card; Ramdhan's freekick only decision was not acceptable.

89' - simply a clear red card, attacker was free all on his own to reach the ball, which he comfortably would have gotten before the goalkeeper; yellow card is a (very) clear mistake.

-> While I would argue 89' is not a clear match error (time on the clock, nature of the situation, nobody complained, Brackley / St. John (RIP) included), it is a significant mistake nonetheless.

Managing the Game

Those two DOGSO incidents are a real shame, because on the whole Ramesh Ramdhan refereed the game very solidly indeed.

He followed play diligently, always gave a concentrated impression, operated a solid foul detection, and used his cards optimally I would say - great opening caution at 26'; FIFA used 41' as an example of what should be a play on call, but actually everybody expected a freekick there. No yellow at 38' was an excellent decision.

Sure, he had some areas for development, his soft skills didn't belong the highest echelon of refs at the tournament, his foul detection wasn't that sophisticated (though he saw through the one clear attempt to take the p*ss out of him - 64'), but in general I liked this performance a lot!

Assistant Referees

Mere Gonzales totally lost his concentration by indicating an offside at 30', sorry but that is really hard to accept at a World Cup level. The rest of his performance was fine.

South African Achmat Salie actually was not supposed to be on this game. In the excitement of one Jack Warner to get a full Caribbean trio (Ramdhan - Gonzales, Powell), FIFA forgot that Jamaica, the country of Owen Powell's origin, were in this group. Facepalm. So Salie and Powell switched roles, with the latter joining Ian McLeod's game (ESPPAR).

Salie was an excellent assistant, his movement style and ability to compute offsides was top drawer. This was an eight-level performance, if not for a tight mistake at 43'; easy to say I suppose, but Salie is a name to watch as the competition moves on.

Balance

If Ramesh Ramdhan had issued the correct sanctions in two DOGSO incidents, then that would have completed a throughly good performance, which should have resulted in a second appointment.

I agree with FIFA that with 12' and 89' included, there were too many doubts, and this would be Ramdhan's only assignment in the middle. Still, certainly a solid performance and the Trinidadian ref did far from a bad job in his only World Cup finals inset.
